The 4 of Pentacles – Power and Boundaries

4 of Pentacles from the DruidCraft Tarot

“Power resides only where men believe it resides. […] A shadow on the wall, yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow.”
― George R.R. Martin

The 4 of Pentacles is often maligned as a card of avarice. Looking at the picture in the DruidCraft Tarot 4 of Pentacles you see a hoarder, someone locking his treasure safely away from others. However, in the Thoth Tarot, this card is titled ‘Power’ (Sun in Capricorn)

In terms of personality, this card usually describes a person who has their walls up. They are likely to listen and observe before opening their mouths. In love, they are cautious at first but once they decide you are worthy, their walls are there to protect you as well as them.

Boundary lessons is a strong theme for people born in the third decan of Capricorn which is the corresponding decan for this Minor Arcana card. The other big theme is personal power and both of these themes relate the solar plexus chakra. These people, once they have developed sound boundaries and a true understanding of their own power, have the ability to help others do the same. They are self-reliant and find it difficult to ask others for help.

In terms of outside influences, the kind of power exerted on the Seeker is often in form of authority figures and government agencies (Capricorn).

As an action advice card, the 4 of Pentacles is usually a warning that there is a need for solid personal boundaries.

The 4 of Pentacles as an expression of the quality/nature of a relationship, it would be one centred around material wellbeing and financial stability. It symbolises an emotionally stagnant relationship that needs to be infused with life and excitement in order to blossom.

The 4 of Pentacles below is from the Dark Fairytale Tarot and showcases more of the personal power aspect of this card.

As a Capricorn card, this Minor corresponds to the Capricorn Devil card in the Major Arcana. The other two Capricorn Minors are the 2 of Pentacles (Jupiter in Capricorn) and 3 of Pentacles (Mars in Capricorn). Other Sun cards in the Minor Arcana are Sun in Aries (3 of Wands), 6 of Cups (Sun in Scorpio) and 10 of Swords (Sun in Gemini).
