The Red King is the male/active principle in Alchemy. He represents Sol and sulfur. The White Queen represents Luna and mercury. The Red King is an interesting choice for The Magician since it reminds us of the alchemical wedding between Sol and Luna / Sulfur and Mercury.
At first it threw me because in the Golden Dawn tradition, the Astrological correspondence for The Magician is Mercury (the Planet, not the chemical compound). Mercury rules communication. He is the Divine Messenger and bridges the realms of the Gods and the mundane.
I feel the Red King is actually a very good fit with Major Arcana number 1. Numerologically, the Magician resonates with Sol (the Sun corresponds with the number 1) and the colour red. It is also associated with willpower as well as communication.
This is how communication (words) and willpower unite to form magick:
Speak with integrity, fully aligned with your Higher Self and every word you speak has the power to raise the dead, move mountains and turn lead into gold.
Conversely, use words flippantly to placate people… make oaths that you know you are going to break… and you will never ever be able to do magick.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Sol is the God, Luna is the Goddess. She knows how to keep the secrets of Sol.
Allow the mystery to unfold in your heart…
